American Council for Polish Culture Board Meeting in Trenton, NJ

By Jo Louise Winters, PR Chair

The recent weekend Spring Board Meeting of the American Council for Polish Culture (ACPC) was hosted by the Polish Arts Club of Trenton, NJ. Led by the enthusiastic and energetic Club President, Mrs. Donna Chmara, the Council’s Board members enjoyed a very hospitable reception Friday evening, and a splendid working lunch on Saturday. The superb climax was the Club’s 62nd Annual Polonaise Ball and Scholarship Awards Dinner at the Trenton Country Club. Ceremonies included scholarship awards to eight high school graduates who will be attending a college or university this fall. Two distinguished Polonia activists in the region, Bozena Bienkowska and Karol Nawarynski, were recognized and honored at this event.

Recent Salmonella outbreak serves as a reminder of safe food handling practices

Seal of IllinoisState public health director urges people to use safe food handling practices when handling produce to prevent food borne illness

SPRINGFIELD – In a proactive measure to address the multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul, including 12 cases in Illinois, Dr. Damon T. Arnold, state public health director, today issued a warning to Illinoisans to use safe food handling practices when selecting, storing or preparing all produce.

“The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed 12 cases of Salmonella that are the same strain as national Salmonella Saintpaul cases. The Department is still investigating these cases to determine the source of this strain of Salmonella in Illinois,” said Dr. Arnold. “We strongly advise consumers to use safe food handling practices to prevent illness.”

The Rezko Corruption Verdict

Tony RezkoStatement from Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna regarding the Tony Rezko verdict:

„Today’s guilty verdict for Tony Rezko is another sad reminder of the broken political system in Illinois and the continuing nightmare of corruption in this state.

„The headlines tomorrow will reduce an already diminished faith in public service from a people – who in Illinois – face the highest gas prices in the nation, huge taxes and out-of-control spending.

„Democrats promised change and the people of Illinois have gotten the same old song and dance.

„Now that the trial has come to an end, it’s time Rod Blagojevich came clean with the people of Illinois and answered the numerous questions surrounding his involvement with Tony Rezko.”

Reports From The War Front

War PlaneBy Richard N. Baldwin T. /HispanicVista.com

Shortly after my prior column, An Exit Strategy From A Never Ending War, went to press, a good deal of reporting on the México vs. Drug War situation hit the Mexican press.

Keep in mind that that this is an opinion column and I am not a reporter (reporting on drug war issues can be dangerous in México). I do not mention names or the names of the drug cartels involved. My mama didn’t raise any fools.

Much of the reporting is concerned with the „Zetas”, (Los Zetas) who are a heavily armed and well trained paramilitary group that was originally formed from deserters from the Mexican army. Unlike your standard „enforcers” in this conflict, these people know their business. In addition, they are armed with the latest weapons and technology. In fact, they are armed better than any of the police forces in México and probably as good as the Mexican army.  This includes such arms as AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles, 50mm machine guns, grenade launchers, ground-to-air missiles and even helicopters. They are highly motivated and are known to have few limits for violence.

Homesick refugee’s language and culture academy blooms

Kids studyingThe first-graders in Irena Miluski’s class are learning to play chess and checkers in Polish a lesson in language immersion
Upstairs, fourth-graders study religion, also in Polish. Lila Rutkowska showed her students photos of icons, paintings, and a famous visitor at a Krakow altar.

„Kto to jest?” she asked Who is this?

„Jan Pawel,” they shouted gleefully John Paul.

The parents of the students at the John Paul II School of Polish Language and Culture have heard all about the studies that show learning more than one language in childhood is a boon to nimble thinking as well as fluency. They are also part of the culturefest that is life in California schools, and they have no intention of being left out.

Cukrzyk musi jednak unikać alkoholu, cukru, słodyczy, produktów tłustych i słonych. Powinien jeść co 2-3 godziny (5-6 razy dziennie), ściśle przestrzegając – z dokładnością do pół godziny – ustalonych pór posiłków. Chorzy, którzy przyjmują insulinę przed kolacją, muszą potem jeszcze coś dodatkowo zjeść, najlepiej kanapkę. Te same posiłki podawane w kolejnych dniach powinny zawierać zbliżone ilości składników odżywczych, zwłaszcza węglowodanów, i nie mogą być zbyt obfite.

Polish Americans – A Vibrant Ethnic Community in the United States

There are about 10 million Polish Americans, and they make up the 9th-largest ethnic community in the United States. Polish Americans played a major role in bringing freedom to Poland in past decades, including support of the Solidarity movement and Poland’s entry into NATO. Today, Polish Americans benefit from a special relationship between the U.S. and Poland.

The large wave of emigrants that came during and after the Solidarity movement brought a new vitality to Polish American life, both in Chicago and elsewhere in the U.S. It has helped Polonia to be better-organized, and has also re-energized the business and cultural life of the Polish American community. The Chicago metropolitan area is, of course, the largest center of Polish American life—with most of the national headquarters of Polish American organizations, hundreds of smaller organizations, many major cultural institutions, a great many churches which offer Polish Masses, over 30 Polish “Saturday schools,” and thousands of businesses.

Ratujmy Muzeum Polskie w Rapperswil!

RapperswilJak podaje Anna Buchmann, dyrektor Muzeum Polskiego w Rapperswilu, zaplanowana przez gminę grodzką Rapperswilu i miasto Rapperswil-Jona budowa nowoczesnego muzeum miejskiego (tzw.

Blagojevich administration to hold welcoming day for new Americans

Learning Resource CenterState agencies and the College of DuPage team up to offer free health screenings, employment information and other services

CHICAGO – Officials from Governor Rod R. Blagojevich’s Administration, the Office of New Americans Policy and Advocacy and the Illinois Welcoming Center today joined the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn to host “Illinois Welcoming Day,” a comprehensive resource fair that gives new Americans first hand information on state services that are available to them. The Illinois Department of Human Services and other state agencies set up information booths on employment, training and education information and also offered free health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, as well as vision and dental exams.

“The Illinois Welcoming Day is a key step forward in the way the State works with hard working new Americans who need information and services as they make Illinois their home,” said Gov. Blagojevich. “By bringing state services directly to the community we are breaking down barriers that keep so many new residents from accessing the American Dream.”
