Impasto is a painting exhibition featuring works by these two “painterly” painters. Both Pavlotsky and Foreman create works which thrive within the materiality of paint, referencing a number of sources, from traditional figure painting and Abstract Expressionism, to street art of Chicago. Though Pavlotsky nods to representation while Foreman navigates abstraction, the painters share a fondness for process and layers which manifests in sculptural low-relief on the canvas.
Dimitri Pavlotsky, a trained figurative painter, looks to 19th century Russian literature to visually re-invent this period through his Nostalgia Series. Pavlotsky denounces the traditional constraints of his formal training and relies on the meaty viscosity of oil paint and gesture to reconstruct the feel of lavish, classical dress worn by recognizable figures. Pavlotsky’s precision and classical technique are forfeited in favor of bold emotional content and feverish spontaneity.
Jori Foreman employs self-made masses, web-like lines and organic Art Nouveau forms, to create whimsical layers of abstraction conveyed through a rich, vibrant palette. Foreman draws upon the physicality of her body, to create fluid but orderly marks and drips that translate into small, remarkable moments of painterly composition.
