From Eau Claire skiers will travel north to Ishpeming, Mich. and then down to Fox River Grove, Ill. to compete in the third leg of the series at the Norge Ski Jump on Sunday, Jan. 31st. While in Fox River Grove, skiers will also compete on Saturday during the Jr. Olympic try-out meet.
Foreign teams have been busy the past few weeks strategizing which of it’s countries best ski jumpers will be chosen. Last year a young Polish jumper took top honors at the competition and the two time national champion of Russia took second place. Russia will also be entering the meet again this year coached by six time Norge champion and 1988 Olympic competitor, Edward Suboch.
Acording to Norge spokesman Charlie Sedivec, Suboch told his skiers to bring their cross country skis and swim suits this year. When one young skier asked the coach, “are we going to be able to go swimming, Suboch responded,” yes, and cross country skiing! Because if you don’t win that’s how you will be getting home!
American skiers have come a long way over the past few years. Norge ski club has always produced some of the top jumpers in the US. and this year will be no exception. The training facility at Fox River Grove is as good as any of it’s kind in the country. With Michael Glasder of Cary being out of the country competing in a world cup meet, the Norge team will be headed up by Fox River Grove’s A.J. Brown, who has been capturing several top honors throughout the country since recovering from a serious crash a couple years ago.
Norge’s two day event will begin at noon on both Sat., Jan. 30 and Sun., Jan. 31. Admission is $15 at the gate or $10 in advance if purchased from area merchants. Admission buttons are good for both days. Parking is free. There are concession stands on sight therefore carry ins are not permitted. Norge Ski Jump is located just three blocks west of the intersection of routes 14 and 22 in Fox River Grove. For further information please call 847/639-9718.
