In May of this year, once again, a town in the South of Poland called Nowy Sącz will host important personas of the opera world, distinguished singers, teachers and above all, young adepts of the vocal arts. They will come to this small, charming city to participate in the Ada Sari International Vocal Artistry 19th Festival and 17th Competition.
The event, taking place regularly every two years since 1985, was created by Professor Helena Łazarska, an extraordinary personality, an outstanding teacher, former Head of Vocal Department at the Krakow Academy of Music, as well as Professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg and at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. Amongst the stars, who began their careers at the Ada Sari Competition’s podium, are such prominent Polish singers as: Piotr Beczała, Andrzej Dobber, Anna Simińska, Anna Lubańska and Arnold Rutkowski. At the last competition, Małgorzata Walewska, Polish singer, has taken over as the Artistic Director.
This year the Ada Sari Vocal Artistry Competition received a record number of 81 entries from as many as 17 countries: Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, China, Sweden, Germany, Swaziland, Austria, Belarus, France, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, and Lithuania.
In addition to Małgorzata Walewska hosting as Chairman, the jury consists of: Helena Łazarska – the Honor Chairman of the Jury, Constanze Könemann (Director of the Hamburg State Opera), Peter Schreier (singer – tenor, conductor), Samantha Farber (Managing Director of Sono Artists, Vienna), Sebastian Perłowski (conductor, composer), Wojciech Rodek (conductor, Artistic Director of the Grand Theatre Łódź), Marcin Habela (singer – baritone, Head of Vocal Department of the Geneva University of Music), Karen Stone (General Manager of the Theater Magdeburg), and Wojciech Maciejowski (singer – tenor, Head of Vocal Department of the Poznań Academy of Music), acting for many years as secretary of the Jury.
The contestants who qualify for the finals will be accompanied by the Krakow Opera Orchestra led by Marta Kluczyńska. The prize pool is 70.000 PLN (approximately 17.000 EUR).
The Ada Sari Vocal Artistry Festival opens with a concert performance of P. Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. The cast includes Małgorzata Walewska (Santuzza), Arnold Rutkowski (Turiddu), Mariusz Godlewski (Alfio) and Wanda Franek (Lola). The Polish Radio Choir and the Beethoven Academy Orchestra will be conducted by Francesco Bottigliero.
The second concert will be performed by students of the Krakow Academy of Music. The program consists of arias and songs from and inspired by the baroque era. They will be accompanied by the Baroque Orchestra of the Krakow Music Academy, under the music direction of Marek Toporowski. The program will include compositions by J. S. Bach, M. Reger, F. Mendelssohn, R. Fuchs.
At the end of the Festival, Terrence McNally’s Maria Callas. Master Class will be played. The role of the legendary diva will be portrayed by one of Poland’s most famous actresses, Krystyna Janda, and her students by singers: Agnieszka Adamczak (soprano), Anna Patrys (soprano), Mateusz Zajdel (tenor).

ADA SARI (1886-1968)
Ada Sari was born under the name of Jadwiga Szayer on the 19th of June 1886 in Wadowice, Poland. Three years later her father was appointed mayor of Nowy Sącz, where Jadwiga took singing, piano and foreign language classes.
She returned there after studying in Cieszyn and Krakow. Between 1905-1907, she took singing lessons in the Countess Pizzamano’s private school in Vienna, then in Milano with Professor Antonio Rupnick. In 1909, she debuted at the Teatro Nazionale in Rome with the part of Marguerite in Ch. Gounod’s Faust and accepted the artistic pseudonym
of Ada Sari. In the following years she performed in: Milano (Teatro Dal Verme), Naples (Teatro di San Carlo), Alexandria, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Lviv, Krakow, Vienna, and Warsaw. In 1923, she performed the part of Queen of the Night at the Teatro alla Scala in W. A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte under Arturo Toscanini’s direction. In 1928, she sang a recital
at Carnegie Hall in New York. After the War, between 1945-1947 she taught singing at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow, and later at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw, where she received the title of Professor. She died on the 2nd of July 1968, in Aleksandrów Kujawski in Poland.
Ada Sari gained world-wide fame. She performed under the baton of such brilliant conductors as Ruggero Leoncavallo, Pietro Mascagni and Arturo Toscanini. On stage, she sang alongside Beniamino Gigli, Mattia Battistini, Titta Ruffo, Tito Schipa, Fyodor Shalyapin, Leonid Sobinov and Aureliano Pertile. Fritz Kreisler and Pablo Casals accompanied her performances.
Ada Sari was the teacher who really transplanted the great school of Italian singing onto Polish ground. She served as tutor to: Halina Mickiewiczówna, Vittoria Calma, Bogna Sokorska, Maria Fołtyn, Barbara Nieman, Janina Głodzińska “Stano”, Zdzisława Donat, Jerzy Karolus, Urszula Trawińska-Moroz and many other outstanding figures of the Polish vocal artistry.
