This November marks two years since the passing of Joanna Bruzdowicz (1943-2021), one of the top Polish composers and promoters of Polish culture. Alongside Grażyna Bacewicz, Anna Maria Klechniowska, Bernardetta Matuszczak, Barbara Niewiadomska, and Marta Ptaszyńska, Bruzdowicz was one of several Polish female composers who studied with the famous Nadia Boulanger in France.
Joanna Bruzdowicz was also one of the steadfast donors and supporters of the Polish Music Center’s Manuscript Collection. Her early gifts included Trio dei Due Mondi for violin, cello and piano (1980), Tre Contre Tre for flute, oboe, viola and three percussions (1979), Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1974), and Marlos Grosso Brasileirs “Chant d’amitié” for flute, violin harpsichord and tape (1980). After Bruzdowicz’s passing, her family entrusted nearly all of her musical material to the PMC, as well as personal items such as letters, photos, medals, etc., creating the Joanna Bruzdowicz Collection in the PMC Archives.
On November 25, pianist Piotr Kowal and cellist Paweł Czarakcziew will honor Bruzdowicz’s memory with a concert featuring her compositions. The program includes Ballada romantyczna [Romantic ballade] for piano, cello sonata The Song of Hope and Love, Szesnaście obrazków z wystawy Salvadora Dali [Sixteen pictures from Salvadore Dali’s exhibition] for piano, and Largo for cello and piano. It will be performed in a charming venue in Nowy Dom Sztuki, located near the Radziejowice Palace in Poland.
