Saturday, February 27, 2010, was a “golden” day for the Polish Olympic Team in Vancouver. On the second-last day of competition, they earned their first gold medal and added an unexpected bronze to bring the total to six medals — the most ever for Poland in a Winter Olympics. The whole country watched with pride as the Polish red and white flag was raised and the Polish national anthem was played.
Justyna Kowalczyk is coming home with three medals — a gold, a silver, and a bronze in women’s cross-country skiing. She won the gold in the 30-kilometer race, silver in the sprint, and bronze in the 15-kilometer race.
Veteran ski-jumper, Adam Malysz , won two silver medals in men’s individual ski-jumping events, adding to the two medals he won in Salt Lake City in 2002.
And the Polish women’s speed-skating team beat out the United States to come in third in the team pursuit race, behind Germany and Japan. The three team members who earned bronze are Katarzyna Bachleda-Curus, Katarzyna Wozniak, and Luiza Zlotkowska.
Congratulations to Team Poland!
