Museum of History of Radom has a modern display, combining traditional forms and multimedia applications. A glamorous, three-storey exhibition, has been built in two historic, renovated tenement houses at Radom Market Square – an effect of a cooperation of historians, meseologists and visual identification specialists. Rich history of Radom, that stretches back more than one thousand years, is shown both with historic artifacts and various multimedia applications, bringing together learning, technology and fun.
On the three floors of the exhibition in Gąska nad Esterka tenement houses, history of Radom from 9th century to year 1945 is shown. Visiting starts from the Esterka tenement house’s basement. First, we watch a 10-minute movie, showing the whole history of the town. On hallway walls we can see history of the archeological excavations in Piotrówka hillfort – the oldest part of the town.
First hall is dedicated to history of Radom in Early Middle Ages. 10th century hillfort and so called servant villages are presented in a special niche under a glass floor – it is a very modern solution. Special LCDs present exhibits from that period. Complete exposition is a mixture of real artifacts and multimedia applications. In the next hall we find objects discovered by archeologists in the Old Radom (at Saint Venceslaus’s Church and surroundings). Three VR goggles available as well. Then we explore history of the town in 14th and 15th century. Main attraction of the site is a restored medieval market stall.
On the first floor of Gąska tenement house we find out about events from the time of the Noble Republic of Poland (16th-18th c.). Except LCDs with games for children, there are also sites to dress up, using old-style clothes.
On the second floor we’re welcomed by Walery Przyborowski, 19th/20th century historian and writer from Radom, in his own office. Another hall transfers us in the times of the Warsaw Duchy and the Congress Poland (19th c.) There’s a 3D animation, to see liberation of Radom from Austrian hands, by French Imperial Army(1809). We can also see beautiful replicas of military uniforms from 19th century. The next room is dedicated to January Uprising and subsequently, through antique-like door, we enter pharmacy „Under the White Eagle”; furniture from 1824 is original. Behind the pharmacy we have a kaiser panorama with many pictures of old Radom, from Jacek Malczewski Museum’s collection. The next parts of the whole exhibition show history of the economy of Radom in the second half of 20th c., First World War and the interwar period. In both the last and the biggest hall we can watch exhibits and multimedia applications from the Nazi Germany occupation period and a animated film, summarizing all the most important events from the whole history of Radom (9th c. till now).
