The names of 186 Polish and Lithuanian families listed below were awarded the Ogonczyk Coat of Arms by Polish kings during a period of eight hundred years and became members of the Polish Nobility. A hereditary title of count and knighthood was also granted with the coat of arms. Citizens of Poland in ancient times were awarded nobility status for their contribution to Poland on the battlefield for personal valor or for outstanding service to the Kingdom and the Republic. This was the only method in ancient times for awarding a status of distinction upon citizens before the establishment of the Order of the White Eagle in the 17th century. These families shared the same coat of arms as insignia on family estates, official seals, rings, battle dress and flags. During military operations these families would assemble under the Ogonczyk banner and fight as a group as seen in battle drawings especially at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 and at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.
To this day the Ogonczyk Coat of Arms can be seen in the chapel at Vienna in which the clan participated with King Jan Sobieski defending Europe from the Turkish invasion. Their names and their descendents were registered in Polish books of nobility and maintained by heralds in official records of the Kingdom and the Republic. In modern times the practice of granting nobility status was discontinued but the tradition lives on. In Poland it is one of the most important documented system in genealogical studies.
The arrow symbol used for the Ogonczyk coat of arms has its origin in ancient times dating back to at least the 5th century. It is one of the oldest coats of arms of the Polish nobility system.
The names have been obtained from Polish Books of Nobility such as Polska Encyklopedja Szlachecka and works by Paprocki, Niesiecki, Leszczyc, Dziedulewicz, Wittyg, Malachowski and others.
Approximately 9,000 families were awarded about 15,000 coats of arms. Many families were awarded multiple coats of arms, some up to 20. There are approximately 550 different coats of arms in the Polish Nobility system.
