In its latest ranking, which in large part is based on data from 2015, Poland took second place in the ranking measuring freedom of speech and expression. The United States came in first. Germany, Italy and France performed substantially worse than Poland. The study carried out by the Pew Research Center was based on five questions regarding free speech and the freedom of the media.
According to the Pew Research Centre, Poland received 5.66 points on a scale of 8 in the so-called “Free Expression Index”, that is the indicator of freedom of expression. This was only 0.07 points less than the United States, which came out on top. The findings of the research centre show that the United States does the most to support freedom of speech, independent media as well as the lack of censorship on the part of the political leadership. Following Poland in the ranking were countries such as Great Britain (Free Expression Index = 4.78 points), Italy (4.69) and Germany (4.34).
Analysts at the Pew Research Centre stressed that Americans are significantly more tolerant of insulting comments than the citizens of other countries. 77 per cent of U.S. citizens support the right of others to express opinions that could be insulting to their own religious beliefs. Moreover, 67 per cent of those asked believe that people should have the right to voice statements that insult minorities. The Pew Research Center is an independent organization that studies respect for fundamental civil rights around the world.
