LAS VEGAS– The season for the tight bonded IndyCar teams took a solemn note with the death of very popular English driver Dan Wheldon. The 33-year-old racer, now of St. Petersburg, was flung into the catch fence and his massive injuries were fatal. The race was only in the 13th lap when a 15-car pileup ensued. Wheldon was a fan favorite and a sponsor’s dream spokesman.
The race at the Las Vegas Speedway was cancelled. “IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners have decided to end the race,” IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. Three other drivers were seriously injured including Will Power.
Also taken to University Medical Center were J.R. Hildebrand and Pippa Mann.
The track had been red-flagged following the accident and crews removed debris and worked on securing the fences. The other drivers were aware of the fatality before they took a five-lap salute around the oval.
Wheldon was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, including this year’s race.
