The Protégé Philharmonic (Chicago) to perform its first concert of the 2011 summer season at Northeastern Illinois University’s auditorium, featuring music of Glinka, Prokofiev and Brahms…
CHICAGO – July 8, 2011 – The Protégé Philharmonic of Chicago is proud to announce its first concert of the 2011 summer season at the Fine Arts Auditorium at Northeastern Illinois University on July 17, 2011 at 3 p.m.; $5 admission.
Since the orchestra has moved its summer season to the university’s acoustically fine and comfortable auditorium, audiences and enthusiasm have been growing. The auditorium is located at 3701 West Bryn Mawr Avenue. The Protégé Philharmonic, along with its parent institution, the Classical Symphony Orchestra continue to be the only training and youth orchestras in Chicago that offer a regular summer season.
Music director and founder of the orchestra, Joseph Glymph, has programmed Glinka’s Russlan and Ludmilla: Overture, Prokofiev’s very real music about a fictious soldier, Lieutenant Kije Suite, and Brahms’s most humane and warm symphony, his Symphony No. 2 in D major. “We are especially delighted to welcome Travis Heath, who will be playing as guest of the orchestra the famous trumpet solo in Lieutenant Kije,” said Mr. Glymph. Dr. Heath is an Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Northeastern Illinois University, and has a long and active performing career, including playing lead trumpet for Ray Charles on two different PBS broadcasts.
Lynn Glymph, executive director of the Protégé Philharmonic, said, “I have been very excited to hear the orchestra develop this summer, learning such challenging music, and able to perform it so convincingly.”
“I am constantly amazed, and gratified, to hear the players of the Protégé orchestra achieve such mastery of such diverse music. The thought that teenagers can perform Brahms so well is testament to the value and importance of the Protégé Philharmonic’s programs directed at training our next generation of musicians,” said Gregory Zinkl, member of the orchestra’s Board of Directors.
About the orchestra: The Protégé Philharmonic, along with its parent organization, the Classical Symphony Orchestra, build the future of classical music through the cultivation of young artists, which includes orchestral training opportunities, chamber music ensembles, soloists and composers. The audition-only orchestras count members from the Chicago metropolitan area and northwest Indiana ,ranging from junior high and high school (the Protégé Philharmonic) through college, graduate school and interested, highly qualified adults from the community (the Protégé Philharmonic). The orchestras provide professional orchestra training and receive coaching from professional accomplished musicians from throughout the Chicagoland area. Each orchestra gives at least four programs every regular season, including several free concerts at the Chicago Cultural Center, and two concerts each during the summers. The orchestras rehearse at Classical Symphony Hall, 218 South Wabash Avenue; rehearsals are open to the public. Please see the orchestra’s new website below for more details.
Sincerely,
Lynn M. Glymph
