Chicago, IL., 10/12/11 — An estimated 5,000 students from high schools and colleges around the country will participate at the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) 2011 Leadership Series. Omaha, Nebraska will serve host to the second stop on this prestigious tour. The Latino College Leadership Summit will feature prominent national guest speakers, and students will participate in a free day of workshops focused on educational opportunities, leadership development and overcoming challenges that impact Latino students.
“The educational experience of Latinos in America has been described by many as a national tragedy” said, Dr. Juan Andrade, USHLI President. “Education will be the single largest factor in shaping the future of Latinos in the United States. With an education we can better serve and lead this nation. Without an education we will be relegated to permanent underclass status. It is in the best interest of America to educate its people.”
The national high school dropout rate is at an alarming 40 percent, and the public school system alone is comprised of nearly 20 percent Latino.

“Latinos are the fastest growing population in this country and the fact that only 12 percent of Latinos have a bachelor’s degree and 4 percent have an advanced degree is unacceptable” said Andrade. “50,000 Latinos turn 18 years old every month; these are college students in the waiting, potential voters, Latinos ready for the workforce and consumers – we must encourage them to stay in school and fight for their future.”
The purpose of the college fair is to encourage students to stay in school; to focus on academic performance; to graduate from high school; and pursue post-secondary education and/or training.
The purpose for the leadership conference to introduce and engage students on current political, social and cultural issues; make them aware of graduate school opportunities; assist with job opportunities and training; and, encourage students to seek out community services opportunities in and out of college.
