The Folger Shakespeare Library is a world-class research and cultural center located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. We are home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection and a primary repository for rare materials from the early modern period (1500–1750).
The Folger Consort has been in residence at the library since 1977 and is the leading early music ensemble in the Washington area. Our co-artistic directors Robert Eisenstein and Christopher Kendall form the core of the ensemble and are joined by internationally noted guest artists each season.
Our 36th season, entitled Instruments of Exploration, will highlight six centuries of exploration throughout the world— in Spain, the Americas, France, China, and Poland—and the music that it inspired. We will also hear songs and orchestral music inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest in the magnificent Washington National Cathedral.
While the entire season may be of interest to your constituents, there is one performance I wanted to bring to your attention:
April 11-13, 2014: The Consort closes our season with the eastern tributary to the main stream of Renaissance music—the rarely heard, extraordinary musical art of Poland, Europe’s largest kingdom during the 16th- and 17th-centuries.
Here we traverse the songs and sacred music in four performances of Polish composers like Mikolaj Zielenski and Waclaw z Szamotul. With bagpipe, viols, cornetto, lute, organ, and trombone, and vocal ensemble.
The concerts take place at the Folger in our 250-seat Elizabethan-styled theater. Our recent season of performance saw an average attendance of 99%; we expect similar attendance figures this year, and will consider adding a fifth performance, if needed.
