Washington, D.C. – May 3.2011. Today, Congressman Joe Walsh (IL-08) announced that Karim Mohammadali, an 11th grade student at Hoffman Estates High School
, is the district winner of the 2011 Congressional Art Competition.
Mohammadali is invited to attend a reception in Washington D.C. in June. His photograph entry, entitled Light of Day, will be showcased in a yearlong exhibit in the Cannon tunnel that leads into the U.S. Capitol. Since many of the 4 million people that visit the Capitol each year pass through the Cannon Tunnel, having artwork displayed there is a very prestigious honor. The winner also receives two round-trip tickets to Washington and a chance to meet members of Congress and fellow students from across the country, in addition to learning more about the legislative process.
“Congratulations to all the students who contributed to the 2011 Congressional Art Competition,” said Congressman Walsh. “I am amazed by the artistic abilities of the young people across the district, and I look forward to meeting Karim Mohammadali, the young man who so beautifully captured the Illinois sky at dawn.”
The second place winner A Salute by Devin Becker will have his artwork displayed in the Congressman’s D.C. office, while the third place piece, Diversity in America by Hannah Hwang will be on display in the district office in Fox Lake.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nation-wide competition.
