What to Do When You Lose Your Health Insurance

By Janet Trautwein

Every corner of the nation is reeling from the recession. The government recently reported that America lost 2.6 million jobs last year. And the national unemployment rate now stands at 7.6 percent.

Because health insurance is usually tied to employment, many folks are at risk of losing their coverage.

Fortunately, there are several ways that newly unemployed workers can obtain affordable health insurance, even if they’re in less-than-perfect health.

One option is individual health insurance on the private market. Individual policies can cover just one person or an entire family. There are thousands of agents across the country who can help you find an affordable policy that suits your needs. The „agent finder” tool on the National Association of Health Underwriters’ (NAHU) website at www.nahu.org can be a great resource for locating a qualified health insurance professional near you.

State health director urges consumers to be aware of recalled peanut butter products

Illinois reports six cases of salmonella matching the nationwide outbreak

SPRINGFIELD – Dr. Damon T. Arnold, state public health director, is asking consumers to let store managers and their local health department know when they see items on grocery store, in vending machines, gas station or convenience stores shelves that have been recalled because of the nationwide Salmonella outbreak.  The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is working with local health departments across the state to check stores for recalled products, but the number of recalled items continues to grow and it can be difficult to keep pace.

The most recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) list of products being recalled in relation to the nationwide Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak can be found on the IDPH Web site.   Information from both the Minnesota and Connecticut state health departments, along with the results available from laboratory testing and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) epidemiological analysis, have now led the FDA to confirm that the source of this outbreak is peanut butter and peanut paste produced by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Ga. processing plant.

BBB Warns About the Small Print Trapping Those Wanting a Smaller Waist

Brazilian Acai Berry Chicago, IL- January 6, 2009–Ads promoting pills containing Brazilian Acai Berry for weight loss are very common online. Trial samples of the products are touted as „risk free” for only shipping and handling charges by credit card.  However, at the bottom of the ads, in print smaller than most people would ever want their waists to be, is the notice that the recipient must return any unused portion of the product within a very narrow period of time.  If they don’t the companies may automatically begin charging the consumer reoccurring monthly fees or enter them into memberships that range from $39 to $100 a month.

In November alone, more than 1.5 million people searched for the term on Google. Online ads and Web sites often include a photo of a celebrity – such as Oprah and Rachel Ray – and claim that she endorses acai as a weight loss miracle.

„The BBB strongly encourages consumers to make sure to read all the fine print and terms & conditions while purchasing any product, and be especially cautious with free trial offers,” said Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of The Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois.

Don’t Fall Prey to the Five Myths of Health Care

By Sally C. Pipes

President-elect Barack Obama has promised to make healthcare reform a top priority. But in order to follow through, Obama and lawmakers on Capitol Hill must reject some longstanding misconceptions about health care in this country.

Here are five such myths. Each is widely repeated, deeply held — and dead wrong.

1.) We need more government to insure poor Americans.

Government has been providing health coverage to low-income patients for over 40 years. The results are hardly encouraging.

Witness Medicaid. The quality of care beneficiaries receive is exceedingly poor. Heart attack victims covered by Medicaid, for instance, are less likely to receive state-of-the-art care than their privately insured counterparts — and they’re more than twice as likely to die as a result of their illness.

Preempting Your Right to Innovative Drugs

By Joel White

Jurors aren’t physicians. They’re regular people. So why would we entrust them with medical decisions best made by clinicians or scientists?

It sounds preposterous, but jurors could be given the responsibility for deciding how doctors should practice. That’s the scenario one woman is pushing before the Supreme Court.

Instead of expert scientists at the Food and Drug Administration having the final say on drug safety, people whose medical training consists of watching „ER” reruns could wield the power to pull the plug on a drug critical to your health.

The Court just heard oral arguments in Wyeth v. Levine challenging a legal doctrine known as „preemption,” which states that federal law trumps state law when they conflict. Rooted in the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, this legal principle provides a way to resolve discrepancies between federal, state, and local statutes.

State Public Health Director encourages women to get screened for breast cancer

Breast CancerCHICAGO – On behalf of Governor Rod R. Blagojevich, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold today spoke at the annual Polish American Breast Cancer Awareness Forum to help educate women about the importance of routine breast and cervical cancer screenings. Dr. Arnold also encouraged uninsured women to sign up for the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP). The Breast Forum, held at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, served as an open discussion between members of the community, physicians, healthcare advocates, breast cancer survivors, and patients.

Created to increase awareness about breast cancer in Chicago’s Polish Community and encourage women to get annual breast exams, the Polish American Breast Cancer Awareness Program offered free breast exams throughout the day to conference attendees.

“It is extremely important for us to encourage the women in our lives to go and get screened for breast and cervical cancer,” said Governor Blagojevich. “In many cases, early detection of breast cancer can mean the difference between life and death. What is wrong with feeling good? The All-American myth of Self-Esteem.

By Elizabeth Mika

Smily frog When Krystyna Teller approached me about writing this article, I thought oh my gosh, can I?  Will I? How? The article was supposed to be psychological = enlightening and full of wisdom. How can I possibly manage? Psychology is not my domain; the years spent on studying human psyche (and here I think of my formal education as well as casual observations) led me to two conclusions: we know very little about our fellow human beings, and understand even less. To make the matter worse the article was to be about self-esteem, a subject I personally know nothing about. (Isn’t it an encouraging beginning?)
