CHICAGO (November 16) – Michael Kutza, Founder and Artistic Director of the Chicago International Film Festival, was honored with the Sydney Pollack Award last night at the 26th American Cinematheque Gala, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, California.
HONOLULU– The award winning comedy “Get A Job” with the giant soundtrack was filmed entirely in Hawai’i. Every state across the country wants film production for their localities because of the economic impact. Hawai’i offers some tax incentives just like many other state do. It is an incentive for producers to bring production and post-production to their communities. The tax credits that “Get A Job” received are now helping the film come to market.
ANN ARBOR– The 19th Ann Arbor Polish Film Festival will run November 9-10th. It is an annual event organized by the Polish Cultural Fund-Ann Arbor. Other sponsoring groups are the Polish-American Congress Ann Arbor Chapter, the University of Michigan’s Polish Club, and the University of Michigan-Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
Polish Teachers Association of America, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago and the Polish Museum of America proudly co-present an exhibit:“The Righteous Among the Nations – Help of Polish people for the Jewish population in southern Poland in the years 1939-1945”.
As you read this, let me tell you a little about why I am giving this a recommended. I love physical comedy! I love slapstick! I grew up with The Three Stooges” and couldn’t stop laughing. Well, in Chicago, we have a trio of players called “500 Clown” that has been pleasing audiences with their zany antics since 2000 and continue to stay alive in our hearts and to make us laugh. Yes, younger audiences will appreciate their style as will those of my age who were “Stooge” fans. They are a combination of action based performers ( almost circus like) who can ad-lib with the best and without much in the way of a script can tell a story allowing everyone to forget their troubles and have some fun.
Recommended*** Raven Theatre has been entertaining Chicago theater audiences for 29 years and as they go into their 30th season, dedicated to breathing “new life” into American Classics, they are presenting “The Big Knife”, Clifford Odets’ in-depth look at how lives can be shattered by the secrets we keep. In this rather long story ( two plus hours, three acts with 2 intermissions), we visit the Hollywood home of Charlie Castle ( a strong performance by Jason Huysman). Charlie, a major star with a large studio is faced with several choices; one to resign with the studio for a long term or to walk away and save his marriage. Marion ( Liz Fletcher) wants Charlie to leave Hollywood, go back to New York with their son and start over, perhaps on the stage. Charlie, although he wants to save his marriage, has a deeper problem. Seems, there was an accident that resulted in a young child being killed. While the world thinks the accident was Charlies public relations man, Buddy ( Mike Boone), we continue to learn more details about what really happened on that fateful evening.

Growing up in a Polish neighborhood in Chicago, I heard a lot about the people of the Tatra Highlands, the Górale; and sadly much that I heard was disparaging. My neighbors were mostly from the north and east of Poland, and they felt that only the Poles from those region were true Poles. According to them, the Górals were uncouth, uneducated, and unwashed. (Interestingly, my neighbors also didn’t have much good to say about the people of Warsaw! But that’s another story.)
