at BOOKEXPO AMERICA 2016

Featuring ten top Polish authors

Poland’s literature and culture will be front and center at the largest book fair in North America, BookExpo America 2016 in Chicago.
 
In addition to a program of informative events on the Polish book industry taking place at BookExpo itself, the Polish Book Institute and the Polish Cultural Institute New York will be presenting a series of off-site events at bookstores, libraries and special venues in Chicago from May 10 to May 14.

These free events will combine Poland’s top talent with prominent members of the Chicago literary community. Featured guests include journalist Artur Domoslawski, designer and journalist team Malgorzata Gurowskaand Joanna Ruszczyk, playwright and novelist Dorota Maslowska, award-winning crime writer Zygmunt Miloszewski, children’s book creators Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielinski, novelist Magdalena Tulli and memoirist Agata Tuszynska.

Featured guests and moderators include New York Timesbestselling authors Sebastian Junger and Sara Paretsky, Words Without Borders editorial directorSusan Harris, and publisher Chad W. Post, along with authors Richard Reeder, Greg Archer, Ron Balson,Laura Caldwell, Alison Flowers, Ru Freeman, andBozena Shallcross. Acclaimed translators Antonia Lloyd-Jones, Bill Johnston, and Karen Kovacik will also take part.

The opening night event of our series, “Discovering Poland,” will also feature the award ceremony of the 2016 Found in Translation Award. This year’s award goes to Bill Johnston for his translation of Twelve Stations, a contemporary epic poem by Tomasz Rozycki. The Found in Translation Award is given every year for the best translation of Polish literature into English in the preceding year. The winner receives a 16,000 zloty cash prize and a three-month translation residency in Krakow, Poland.

Books From Poland is co-presented by BookExpo America, The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, the Polish Book Institute, and the Polish Cultural Institute New York.
