Poznań. Commemoration of the 107th anniversary of the outbreak of the Greater Poland Uprising

December 27/ 2025

On the National Day of the Victorious Uprising of Greater Poland, President Karol Nawrocki visited Poznań, where he took part in the commemoration of the 107th anniversary of those events. – 'The Greater Polish insurrectionists took up their fight in the name of the cradle of Polishness, in the name of their fathers, mothers, grandparents and great–grandparents, who for decades did not yield to Prussian imperialism. They took up their fight so that Poland would remain Polish,’ said the President of the Republic of Poland.

The ceremony at the Monument to the 15th Ulan Regiment of Poznań began exactly at 16:40 with the sound of sirens, marking the exact time of the uprising’s outbreak. The event was attended by representatives of the state authorities and local community.

During his speech, President Karol Nawrocki emphasised that the significance of the victorious Greater Poland Uprising cannot be understood without an awareness of the importance of the Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) region to the Polish people. „The history of Wielkopolska is the cradle of Polishness; it is the source from which the entire Rzeczpospolita was born,” he emphasised.

He recalled that, a thousand years ago, it was on this land that King Bolesław the Brave (Chrobry) accepted the crown, a symbol of the sovereignty and independence of the Polish state. The President also pointed out that, prior to the victorious Greater Poland Uprising, 'this land was involved in the longest war in modern European history’. 'For over a hundred years, it was under the pressure of Prussian and German imperialism, which intensified after 1871 with the formation of the Second German Reich and Otto von Bismarck’s policies,’ he added.

President Karol Nawrocki emphasised that, at the time, Poles responded with social activism and grassroots initiatives. They took great care to preserve the Polish language and nurture national identity.

– One hundred and seven years ago, the 'golden horn’ sounded on this land in the hands of a virtuoso. This virtuoso was not only a master of music, but also a champion of Polish identity and one of the architects of Polish independence: Ignacy Jan Paderewski. The troops then set off to fight for the most important thing: the Republic of Poland: Rzeczpospolita – noted the President.

President Karol Nawrocki also took part in the Greater Poland Uprising March through the streets of Poznań. On 27 December 1918, Paderewski’s speech was read out from the balcony of the Poznan’s 'Hotel Bazar’. The President of the Republic of Poland continued his attendance at the ceremonies by taking part in the Concert of Insurrection Songs.

The National Day of the Great Poland Uprising has been celebrated since 2021. This is the result of a bill submitted by President Andrzej Duda at the request of various Wielkopolska communities. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the largest uprising for independence in territories partitioned by Russia, Prussia and Austria. It broke out in Poznań on 27 December 1918 and ended in victory.
