Spring Break Safety Tips for Broward Families: A Parent’s Guide

Hey fellow Broward parents! Spring Break is almost here, and for those of us with kids in Broward County schools, the countdown to March 16th is officially on. Whether you’re planning a Disney dash, a beach staycation at Pompano, or exploring some free things to do with kids in Broward, we’re all dreaming of some sun-drenched “off” time.

As an insurance agent, I spend my days helping protect families from the unexpected. My goal isn’t to be the fun police, but to help make sure your Spring Break is remembered for the memories—not the insurance claims or legal headaches.

How Can Broward Families Stay Safe During Spring Break?

Spring Break is a time to relax and spend quality time with family, but it also comes with a few safety considerations—from travel and driving to water safety and home security. A little preparation can help Broward families enjoy a smooth and stress-free break. Here’s a quick guide to keeping your family safe and your record clean this Spring Break.

1. The “Super Speeder” Warning

Florida recently leveled up its road safety game with what many are calling the “Super Speeder” law (HB 351). This is a big one for parents to know—especially if you have teen drivers or tend to push the speed limit on the Florida Turnpike.

In the past, going significantly over the speed limit meant a hefty civil fine. As of July 1, 2025, it is now a criminal offense.

The Threshold:
If you are caught going 50 mph or more over the posted limit, or exceeding 100 mph total, it is now considered a second-degree misdemeanor.

The Consequences:
This is no longer just a ticket you can pay online. It requires a mandatory court appearance and can result in up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense.

The Insurance Impact:
From my desk, I can tell you that a criminal speeding conviction is one of the fastest ways to see your insurance premiums skyrocket—or even risk policy cancellation.

Pro tip: Keep that cruise control set and remind teen drivers to do the same.

2. The “Staycation” Home Check

Planning to stay local this Spring Break? Even if you’re just spending long days at the beach or out exploring Broward County, don’t forget about home security.

Lock the “Doughnut”
Make sure all windows and sliding glass doors—the most common entry points in Florida homes—are locked before heading out.

Social Media Silence
Those “Beach Day!” photos are tempting to post in real time, but consider waiting until you’re home. Publicly sharing that your house is empty can sometimes invite the wrong kind of attention.

3. Road Trip Readiness

Heading out of Broward County for a Spring Break adventure? Take five minutes for a quick “pre-flight” check before hitting the road.

Tires & Fluids
Florida heat is tough on vehicles. Check your tire pressure, coolant, and oil levels before your trip.

Digital Insurance Cards
Download your insurance provider’s app so you always have your insurance ID card and roadside assistance information easily accessible. If you’re pulled over or have a minor fender bender, having everything ready can save a lot of stress.

4. Water Safety is Non-Negotiable

We live in the land of pools, canals, and beaches, and when school is out, water activity increases.

The “Water Watcher” Rule
At the pool or beach, designate one adult as the Water Watcher—someone who is fully focused on the kids and not on their phone or reading. Rotate this responsibility every 20 minutes so everyone stays alert.

Sun Protection Matters
Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before kids hit the water. In the Florida sun, a large portion of sunburn damage happens before you even realize how hot it is.
