CHICAGO — U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) invites the public to attend an open house Wednesday, November 3 at the Chicago District Office. Attendees will be able to learn more about USCIS’s programs and day-to-day work by participating in guided tours, witnessing the presentation of certificates of citizenship, talking with local staff, and learning about the immigration process. This event is part of a series of open houses USCIS is hosting in its offices across the country to enhance the agency’s presence in the community and strengthen its partnership with stakeholders.
As part of the open house, fifth graders from the Louis Pasteur Elementary School will visit the office to learn first-hand about the citizenship process. Immigration officers will provide them with a mock citizenship interview, and the children will participate in a competitive game to test their knowledge of U.S. history and civics. The questions asked will be the same questions that citizenship applicants are asked. The fifth graders will then witness the presentation of certificates of citizenship to a group of approximately 50 citizens.
Local children’s artwork from the USCIS National Children’s Art Project will also be on display – including artwork submitted by the Louis Pasteur fifth grade students. This summer, USCIS invited children across the United States to illustrate their personal interpretations of the theme, “We Are America.” Children submitted more than 5,000 works of art in response. Artwork from the project will also be on display at USCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C. and on the USCIS Children’s Art Gallery Web page at www.uscis.gov.
