Who is Luna, who will represent Poland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024?

Although she is only 23 years old, she has already achieved considerable success in her musical career. Her soft voice and expressive stage presence convinced the TVP jury to send her song ‘The Tower’ as Poland’s entry for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. Who is Luna and where is she from?

A reference to the mystery of the moon – Luna’s real name is Aleksandra Wielgomas and she comes from Warsaw. The media like to remind people that her father is Andrzej Wielgomas – the owner of a well-known Polish food brand. Aleksandra herself, however, never refers to her father, insisting in interviews that she has chosen a musical career on her own.

As a girl, she learnt to play the violin and sang in the children’s choir of the Artos Grand Theatre in Warsaw, where she took her first professional singing lessons with Danuta Chmurska. She honed her stage skills at the famous Machulski Theatre Club.

She recorded her first adult debut song in 2018, using the Kayax label’s ‘My name is New’ campaign to find and promote the work of young musical artists. She wrote the lyrics to this song, ‘Na wzgórzach niepokoju’, to a composition by Marcin Nierubiec, which was even played on Polish Radio.

She often recorded and created duets with better known artists such as Mela Koteluk (joint single ‘Dlaczego drzewa nic nie mówią’) and Marcin Maciejczak (‘Nie proszę o więcej’). She also had plenty of solo success: her song ‘Zgaś’ was one of the hits of 2020.

During the pandemic, her idea of performing under the pseudonym Luna, with references to astronomy, astrology and oneirism, began to take shape. In the arrangement of the song ‘Zgaś’ she wove authentic sounds from space, recorded and published by NASA.

In addition to her success on Polish radio stations, she was also spotted by the owners of Swedish streaming site Spotify, who published her photo on a screen in New York’s Times Square as part of their ‘Equal Spotify’ campaign.

Luna – Aleksandra Wielgomas is currently associated with two music labels. She decided to submit her latest song ‘The Tower’ to the national preliminary round of the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. Despite strong competition, including the song ‘Witcher-Tahoro’ by Justyna Steczkowska, it was Luna’s composition that was chosen to represent Poland in the contest.

The song is a typical radio song: it has a melodic line that is easy to remember and repeat, and it is both rhythmic and calm, thanks to the singer’s soft, slightly ‘whispery’ voice. Her lyrics tell a story of self-confidence and belief in one’s own abilities, despite the disbelief of those around and numerous adversities. ‘The Tower’ was very well received by the Eurovision commentators but the bookmakers, who are betting on the winner of the contest, put her in 20th place among those who have a chance of actually winning Eurovision.

Luna now faces the challenge of creating the choreography and the entire vocal-visual concept for her performance on the Eurovision stage in Malmö, Sweden, together with the so-called staging experts appointed by TVP. The singer will also take part in the so-called Eurovision Party – pre-festival concerts organised in various European cities.

The 68th International Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will take place from 7 to 10 May. The Polish representative will perform at the first of the two semi-final concerts. If she wins enough votes from the public and the jury, she will go through to the final. Only those who do not live in Poland will be able to vote for her, so – as every year – the success of the Polish representation will largely depend on Poles living abroad, in Europe and several countries outside it, including Australia.
