Amongst the 9/11 first responders, Guardsmen provided security to prevent another attack, and aided civilian and federal emergency relief agencies.

Following the 9/11 tragedy, America became more united as nation, and as this happened so did many security and emergency relief agencies as they served to aid those in need, said Sgt. 1st Class Louis Rivera of Chicago with the108th. As a Chicago Police Officer for 10 years and an Illinois National Guard Soldier for 18, he has served both overseas and on the streets of Chicago.

“I’ve served my country, my community and my city,” said Rivera.

He said through his experiences in Chicago he has seen how military and civilian agencies have earned the respect of the nation after the sacrifices uniformed personnel made on and since 9/11.

“This ceremony showed that we persevered and are not divided, but even after the attacks we’re still a stronger nation … and take a firm stand on terrorism.”
