Volkswagen could consider a move in to Formula One in 2018, according to VW’s head of motorsport.
„I could imagine involvement in Formula One in 2018, when the company is at the forefront of the industry,” Duerheimer told Auto Motor und Sport. „We have enough brands that could do that.”
Formula One has been attempting to attract new manufacturers in recent years, with the 2014 engine regulations deigned to be more appealing to those looking to enter the sport. Adrian Newey said that the original four-cylinder turbo units were proposed for 2013 because Audi would enter F1 as a result, but the manufacturer decided against the move, and the engine regulations were subsequently changed to 1.6L V6 turbos to be introduced a year later.
