Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 concluded today, celebrating the city’s thriving art ecosystem and reaffirming its role as the premier fair in Asia

  • This year’s edition brought together 240 galleries from 42 countries and territories, drawing significant attendance from galleries, artists, and regional and international visitors.
  • The fair attracted an overall attendance of 91,000 throughout its VIP and public days.

  • Exhibitors reported strong sales across all market segments and show sectors, with significant placements of works by Pacita Abad, Michaël Borremans, Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Zeng Fanzhi, Yayoi Kusama, Betty Muffler, Yu Peng, Christina Quarles, Pinaree Sanpitak, Park Seo-bo, Félix González-Torres, Zhi Wei, Lu Yang, Yibei Zhang, and Stella Zhong into prominent private and institutional collections.

Marking its debut at the fair, the MGM Discoveries Art Prize, established to support emerging artists, was awarded on March 28 to Shin Min and her representing gallery, P21 (Seoul), for her installation Ew! There is hair in the food!!, which uses potent symbolism and personal experiences to confront societal norms and systemic injustices. Selected by an esteemed international jury, the artist and their representing gallery received a USD 50,000 cash prize and the opportunity to exhibit in Macau and share her artistic journey with the local arts community.

The dynamic onsite and offsite Public Program celebrated Hong Kong’s vibrancy and reinforced Art Basel’s commitment to delivering outstanding programming within and beyond the halls.

● The Film program, curated for the first time by Hong Kong’s independent art institution Para Site, was met with enthusiastic reception over its four-day run.

● The Conversations Program, featuring panels, talks, and live performances, attracted strong audiences, including a full-house turnout for the Premiere artist talk between Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen and Shabbir Hussain Mustafa, Senior Curator and Head of Exhibitions, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Performance energized this year’s Conversations program, with highlights including performances by Pedro Wonaeamirri and Mayunkiki that explored Indigenous cultural practices, as well as a new commission by Natasha Tontey presented by Audemars Piguet Contemporary. Additionally, there was a performance lecture by digital artist duo Operator showcasing their Generative Choreography Method, which treats performance as an art object.

● The fair’s ambitious Encounters sector, dedicated to large-scale installations and performances, captivated audiences. Viewers were especially drawn to Monster Chetwynd’s surreal, site-specific installation Lanternfly Ballet, presented at Pacific Place with support from Swire Properties, the Official Partner of offsite Encounters. Lu Yang’s on-site pop-up shop, DOKU the Creator, stocked with items created by the artist’s digital avatar, also garnered significant attention and reflected the fair’s embrace of new media.

● Digital innovation was a driving force throughout the fair. Co-hosted by Art Basel Hong Kong and TAEX, the conversation series Digital Dialogues explored the evolving relationship between art and technology. The program culminated in a special performance by digital artist duo Operator, with support from The Sandbox.
