In our editor’s column on 1 May, Patrick Osio addressed the corruption issue in México. I can only add one thing: If there is no corruption in the US, why do the mainstream media there call the Bush administration the most corrupt administration in decades?
But to the point. Anyone reading anything about México in the past few months has seen a steady increase in the violence level in every passing day. 2,700 Mexicans died in the drug wars in 2007. This includes drug personnel in their wars between the cartels, police at all levels, Mexican army casualties and civilians caught in the crossfire. This year, as of 1 May, the figure is around 1,200. Looks like 2008 is going to be a banner year in our war. You might compare this to the US Iraq casualties while remembering that the population of México is only about 110 million. And recently, the assassinations of top-level federal police officials have upped the ante.
