Wbrew rozsądkowi i logice postanowiłem, że podejmę ostatnią próbę napisania listu do Pani. Pisanie dwa tygodnie temu do pana na nic się zdało. Stało się tak, jak tego oczekiwali wszyscy, także i ja sam. Pies z kulawą nogą nie zareagował. Jaki jest więc powód, że nagle zmieniłem zdanie i zdecydowałem zwrócić się do Pani, pomimo wyjawionych wcześniej obiekcji. W liście do pana wyznałem, że napisanie do Pani nie odniesie pożądanego skutku, bo jest Pani zbyt zajęta wykonywaniem czynności za siebie i za pana także. Podtrzymuję tę opinię w całości, ale tonący – a toniemy wszyscy – brzytwy się chwyta, nawet jeśli ją poda najlepszy przyjaciel. Jak wszyscy doskonale wiemy, bać się czy obawiać należy wrogów, bo z przyjaciółmi i tak sobie nie poradzimy.

Postanowiłem, że napiszę do Pani, bo chociaż cała ekonomia spoczywa w przenośni i dosłownie (zamiast kwitnąć to sobie spoczywa) w rękach męskich decydentów i zadowolonych z siebie macho, to resztkami sił być może z Pani pomocą uda mi się dotrzeć do nich, choćby nie bezpośrednio, lecz tylko częściowo. Jeśli się teraz nie szepnie słówka mężczyźnie, to szansa na nową sukienkę czy choćby spódniczkę zdecydowanie zmaleje. Nie wspominam o nowym domu ani o nowej generacji telewizji cyfrowej, bo on przecież i tak na to nie ma czasu a mecz – ten najważniejszy w jego życiu wyczyn – oglądnie u kolegi i wypije przy okazji 12 piw. Na nowym domu i nowym telewizorze nie zależy mu tak, jak Pani, która się przecież bez tego przedmiotu nie obejdzie.

How can the U.S. auto industry compete with foreign car makers when the average hourly pay, including fringe benefits, for the Big Three workers is about $74 per hour compared to $48 per hour for the workers manufacturing foreign cars in the U.S.

The U.S. auto manufacturers have caved in to the demands of the UAW union when negotiating labor contracts, and the UAW has been very unreasonable in its negotiations with management.  The fully funded pensions and health benefits enjoyed by the auto workers are egregious.  Health care and pension costs for the Big Three add approximately $1,500 to the cost of a vehicle compared to foreign competitors.  Both current and retired Big Three auto workers enjoy outlandish health benefits with high health insurance premiums. 

Management should sit with the UAW and renegotiate down the pension benefits and have current workers pay 50% of the health insurance premiums and retired workers pay 25% of the premiums.

One of the great things about autumn in the US as a parent of young children is the steady flow of diversions. October is all about the lead up to Halloween. November is all about Thanksgiving. December is all about the holidays. So, as we approach the end of November, the kids’ questions about Santa Claus are just round the corner.

As everyone knows, Santa Claus has helpful elves that make all the presents for all the children around the world, for Santa to distribute on one frantic chimney-to-chimney delivery. This raises several problems, including why a number of the presents my children will receive will have ‘Made in USA’ or ‘Made in China’ printed on them. I think I have the answer to this particular problem: it’s comparative advantage.

I have no doubt that Santa’s elves could make anything and I assume that they could make it all better and cheaper than anyone else. They have absolute advantage in producing all goods. But does it follow that it makes sense for them to produce all the presents that Santa will give out? In a word, no. […]
