Five of the Famed Thespian’s Films to Be Screened Nov. 15 to 19 

Jerzy Stuhr The Rochester N.Y. Polish Film Festival is hitting the big time. This year, the five-day festival will not only showcase some of Poland’s best cinematic treasures as it has for the past dozen years, it also will bring to town one of Poland’s most acclaimed actors, screenplay writers, and directors to headline the event. Jerzy Stuhr will introduce and discuss five films in which he played a leading role or that he directed.

“Jerzy Stuhr is Poland’s Dustin Hoffman and Stephen Spielberg rolled into one,” said Randall Stone, director of the University of Rochester’s Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, which is sponsoring the film festival.  “Like Dustin Hoffman, Stuhr is an outstanding character actor, able to bring to life all kinds of roles, from comic to tragic; like Stephen Spielberg, his films are intensely entertaining but deeply serious.”

Stuhr, who has won a host of Polish and international film awards, including the 2005 Life Achievement Award at the International Film Festival in Venice, is best known internationally for his role as the thick-witted hairdresser Jurek in Kieślowski’s Three Colors: White. In Poland, fans love his character Max from the 1985 cult comedy Seksmisja, while youngsters know him through the voice of Donkey in the Polish version of Shrek.

Często uwagę naszą przykuwają wydarzenia ekstremalne, jak „zakochanie” Nikole w przeszło osiemdziesięcioletnim mężczyźnie i finansowe tego konsekwencje, czy też Barbary Piaseckiej-Johnson i jej miłosno-finansowe perypetie. Zwykle wydaje się, że tego typu zachowania są zbyt odległe i nas nie dotyczą, lub są dla nas obce jak w oglądanym filmie.

Tymczasem na mniejszą skalę i w nieco odmiennych okolicznościach tego typu wydarzenia stają się aktualne. Dziwimy się nieraz, że w ogóle zaistniały, ale przechodzimy nad nimi do porządku dziennego, traktując je obojętnie, jakby nas nie dotyczyły, lub nabieramy przekonania, że może tak być powinno, z zastrzeżeniem, że i tak nic nie zmienimy.

Nie przeszkadza nam, że czasem dotyczą naszych znajomych czy przyjaciół. Niestety, brak nam nieraz odwagi, aby takie postępowanie dostrzec, czy nawet opowiedzieć innym, nie jak plotkę czy pomówienie, ale jako ciekawe opowiadanie.

Go and VoteMieszkając w USA od 40 lat mam więcej do stracenia niż Wy, drodzy złotówkowi krajanie, obawiający się zainstalowaniem czekoladowego komunisty w Białym Domu. Jestem Amerykaninem zamożnym, w górnym pułapie amerykańskich zarobków, a jednak, ja sam,  kiedyś zawzięty Republikanin,  głosowałem dziś na Obama. Mój wybór był głosem sprzeciwu i jedyną alternatywą. Wybór MacCain’a byłby kontynuacją dotychczasowej polityki G.W. Busha.

Tak zwane rządy konserwatywnych Republikanów i Neo-Konserwatystów wcale nie były konserwatywne. Wydawano obłędne sumy pieniędzy na obłędne wojny, których nie można wygrać. Zapożyczono się u Chińczyków i innych Azjatów do szczytu możliwości.

Professor Frank Kujawinski zmarł nad ranem 1 listopada 2008 roku po długiej i ciężkiej chorobie.

Komisja Wyborcza: Usuń znak popierający kampanię wyborczą kandydata przed przystąpieniem do głosowania.

votePrzewodniczący Komisji Wyborczej miasta Chicago (Chicago Board of Election), Langdon D. Neal poinformował o przepisach dotyczących “campaign-free zones” czyli zakazu agitacji wyborczej w placówkach wyborczych  lub w ich pobliżu, zakazuje ona  noszenia rzeczy lub przedmiotów związanych z kampanią wyborczą, która popiera lub sprzeciwia się któremukolwiek z kandydatów. Langdon D. Neal podkreśla, iż zdrowy rozsądek powinien podpowiedzieć, kiedy wyborcy usuną lub zakryją jakikolwiek detal, który łamie zasady, ci wyborcy zostaną dopuszczeni do głosowania.

“W przypadkach, kiedy sędzia elekcyjny przypomni wyborcom o usunięciu lub przykryciu detalu popierającego kamapnię wyborczą, wyborcy zazwyczaj dostosowują się do przepisów,” oświadczył Przewodniczący, Langdon D. Neal, dodając “Wtedy wyborcy udają się oddać głos.”

CinemaThe second edition of Iran’s International Documentary Films Festival (Cinema Verite) which is the most prominent film festival of Persian Gulf region adjourned on Thursday in Tehran by announcing the winners of national and international sections.

„Cinema Verite” of 2008 hosted bunches of producers, journalists, documentarists and  cinema experts from 84 countries worldwide, while the most of participants belonged to Poland, India, UK, France, Finland, Netherlands, Denmark, the United States, Japan, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland and Brazil.

The auditoriums of International Vahdat Hall, Palestine Theater and Freedom Theater screened up to 200 documentaries from international filmmakers who have been gathered in Iran to expose their talent, capability and skills of displaying the „truth” and „reality” through the means of visual techniques and cinematic knowledge.

State Public Health Director encourages women to get screened for breast cancer

Breast CancerCHICAGO – On behalf of Governor Rod R. Blagojevich, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold today spoke at the annual Polish American Breast Cancer Awareness Forum to help educate women about the importance of routine breast and cervical cancer screenings. Dr. Arnold also encouraged uninsured women to sign up for the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP). The Breast Forum, held at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, served as an open discussion between members of the community, physicians, healthcare advocates, breast cancer survivors, and patients. 

Created to increase awareness about breast cancer in Chicago’s Polish Community and encourage women to get annual breast exams, the Polish American Breast Cancer Awareness Program offered free breast exams throughout the day to conference attendees.

“It is extremely important for us to encourage the women in our lives to go and get screened for breast and cervical cancer,” said Governor Blagojevich. “In many cases, early detection of breast cancer can mean the difference between life and death. I urge all women in Illinois to make an appointment to get screened.”

Sandra FromanSenator Barack Obama says he will respect gun owners, but campaign talk is cheap. What gun owners must know before they vote is that Obama promises to appoint a U.S. Supreme Court that will eradicate the Second Amendment from the Constitution.

On June 26, in the case District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court held in a split 5-4 decision that the Second Amendment secures a right to keep and bear arms for private citizens, and struck down the D.C. law that banned all handguns and readily-usable firearms, even in your own home.  

That decision turned on a single vote. The four liberal justices on the Supreme Court voted against the Second Amendment and to uphold the gun ban. They wrote that the Second Amendment confers no right whatsoever on private citizens, that Americans have no personal right to own guns of any sort, and the government can confiscate or ban them at will.

electionIt’s a day like any other.  The kids are safe at school and you’re at work wishing you weren’t.  All is as it should be.  Then your cell phone rings.  On the other end is your twelve-year-old daughter’s junior high school guidance counselor.  Amid nervous hemming and hawing you detect that something’s horribly wrong.  Then the words, “I’m sorry, she didn’t make it.” 

At first it doesn’t register.  Then it clicks and your soul is pierced.  The room begins to spin and rapidly close in.  You sink deep and grab for something.  But nothing on this earth will hold you up.

Nightmare becomes reality as you learn that your little girl has just bled to death – alone and afraid – on a cold slab at the local Planned Parenthood clinic, the victim of a botched abortion.  She was driven there, unbeknownst to you, by the very guidance counselor to whom you speak.
